Frontier-level reasoning at a fraction of the cost — hosted where you choose

We build apps, agents and coding tools on DeepSeek's open models, and run them safely: in your region, in your cloud or on your own servers, with the testing and guardrails production needs.

Model history

From V3 to V4 in eighteen months

DeepSeek has shipped quickly, and each release changed what open models could do. This is the short version.

Release timeline

  1. DeepSeek V3A large mixture-of-experts model that matched top models at a fraction of the reported training cost.
  2. DeepSeek R1An open reasoning model under the MIT licence that showed its thinking step by step.
  3. R1 and V3 updatesStronger reasoning, hybrid thinking modes and longer context across the V3.x line.
  4. V4 LiteAn early look at the new V4 architecture.
  5. V4 Pro and V4 FlashThe current generation: 1.6T and 284B total parameters, MIT licence, 1M-token context.
  6. Legacy API names retireddeepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner gave way to the V4 model names.
Mixture of experts

Huge models that only use a sliver at a time

DeepSeek's models are split into many specialist “experts”. For each token only a few are switched on, so you get the knowledge of a giant model at the running cost of a much smaller one.

  • V4 Pro: about 1.6 trillion parameters in total, 49 billion active per token.
  • V4 Flash: 284 billion in total, 13 billion active — faster and cheaper.
  • 1M-token context: whole codebases or document sets in one request.

V4 Flash13B of 284B

Thinking mode

Switch on step-by-step reasoning when it matters

DeepSeek models can answer instantly or think first. Thinking costs time and tokens, so we turn it on only for the requests that need precision.

Where to run it

Find the safest way to host DeepSeek

The model is open, but where it runs decides who can see your data. Answer a few questions for our recommendation.

  • DeepSeek API — cheapest, processed in China.
  • Regional provider — pay per token, data in your region.
  • Your cloud or servers — full control with open weights.
Self-hosting footprint

What it takes to run the open weights

The full weights are large. Most private deployments use V4 Flash or a distilled model, often quantised to cut memory further.

  • Storage for the full V4 Pro weights is roughly 865 GB; V4 Flash about 160 GB.
  • Quantisation (8-bit or 4-bit) reduces memory a lot, with some quality trade-off.
  • We load-test on your traffic before buying hardware.

Risk and compliance

Use DeepSeek with your eyes open

Our view: DeepSeek models are excellent value, and most concerns are about the hosted service rather than the weights. Here is how we handle them.

  • Where data is processedDeepSeek's own API runs in China. For personal or regulated data we self-host or use a regional provider instead.
  • Content and alignment checksLike every model, DeepSeek has its own built-in content rules. We test answers on your topics before launch and add guardrails where needed.
  • Policy restrictionsSome governments and companies restrict DeepSeek's hosted app or API. Self-hosted open weights usually avoid this — confirm with your compliance team.
  • Standard securityPrompt-injection defences, PII masking, access control and audit logs, the same as any production AI. See our integration work.

We build with every major model family

We are model-neutral and often combine several behind one API — DeepSeek for volume reasoning, others where they fit better.

FAQ

DeepSeek development questions

Straight answers to what clients ask us most.

What is DeepSeek V4?

DeepSeek V4, released as a preview in April 2026, is DeepSeek's current model generation. V4 Pro has about 1.6 trillion total parameters with 49 billion active per token; V4 Flash has 284 billion total with 13 billion active. Both are mixture-of-experts models with a 1-million-token context and MIT-licensed weights.

Is it safe to use DeepSeek for business?

The models themselves can be run safely. The main question is where your data goes: DeepSeek's own API processes requests in China, so for personal, client or regulated data we self-host the open weights or use a provider in your region, and add the usual guardrails and testing.

Can we run DeepSeek on our own servers?

Yes. The weights are MIT-licensed, so commercial use and self-hosting are allowed. V4 Pro is very large (roughly 865 GB of weights), so most private deployments use V4 Flash or smaller distilled models, quantised to fit available GPUs.

What is thinking mode?

In thinking mode the model works through the problem step by step before answering. It is slower and uses more tokens but is much more reliable for maths, logic, code and planning. We switch it on only for the requests that need it.

Is DeepSeek compatible with our existing OpenAI code?

Yes. DeepSeek's API follows the OpenAI Chat Completions format (and supports the Anthropic format), so switching is usually a change of base URL, key and model name. Self-hosted servers such as vLLM expose the same format.

How does DeepSeek compare on cost?

DeepSeek is among the lowest-cost strong models, with discounted off-peak rates on its own API, and self-hosting removes per-token fees entirely at high volume. We compare it with other models on your own tasks before recommending it.

Do you fine-tune DeepSeek models?

Yes, usually on the smaller distilled models, where LoRA fine-tuning is practical. For the large V4 models we normally rely on prompting and retrieval instead.
